Bombay Beach @ The Salton Sea (HWY 111)

Photobucket

We drove out last night, but it's so dark we didn't see much. All we could hear as we walked along the beach was the crushing of fish skeletons and birds circling overhead. Saw our first shooting star. Pretty neat seeing one blaze across the sky in the middle of nowhere. There must be factories lining Hwy 111 because for about a mile our senses were bombarded with the smells of peppermint, cake mix, and salsa. I can't even describe to you how overwhelming these smells were for a good mile of road. Very weird.

We ventured out there again this morning. The heat was quite unbearable. 115 degrees I believe. We could only stand to be outside of the car for 15 minutes at most. And the overwhelming stench of dead fish lining the shore didn't help, but experiencing the Salton Sea is a must. Abandoned homes. Ghost children riding their bikes down the center of town. A town that consisted of 18 residents and 3 streets. You cannot take a bad picture. Just make sure you have room on your memory card. We took about 300 photos just at Bombay Beach. Wait until you see our photos from Salvation Mountain.

Go if you haven't, but maybe don't go in the middle of July.
